The Legendary Danube
The Legendary Danube
Journey through the heart of Europe along the legendary Danube River which has inspired many renowned musicians, artists and writers throughout the centuries. Unpack once and trace the history of kings and queens through up to eight fascinating countries and four capital cities – Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade. Indulge in exquisitely prepared, regionally inspired cuisine and being pampered by the unparalleled service that only an AmaWaterways river cruise provides.
From awe-inspiring Old-World architecture to medieval town squares to historic UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Danube River has a wealth of experiences waiting for you. While there are wonders to behold in the sought-after grand cities along its banks, such as Budapest’s fairytale Fisherman’s Bastion, Bratislava Castle and Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace, the river carves through many charming hamlets lost in time. Here, trades such as winemaking, farming and apricot harvesting have been conducted the same way for generations, centuries-old cultural traditions like maypole raising in the spring are still honored and intimate wine festivals remain very much alive. You’ll have access to small towns that lie off the beaten path, such as Dürnstein, Austria, with its cobbled streets and hilltop castle ruins where Richard the Lionheart was once imprisoned. In Germany, you’ll discover Passau -– either on two feet or on two wheels on an included bike tour — with its narrow streets, art galleries and shops as well as St. Stephen’s Church, home to the largest pipe organ in Europe.
AmaWaterways’ Co-Founder, Rudi Schreiner, grew up in Vienna along the banks of the Danube River. Inspired by his childhood memories, Schreiner has curated river cruise itineraries that fully immerse you in the rich flavors and storied history of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and beyond.
